Onimusha: Way of the Sword Boss Fight Guide

The bosses in Onimusha: Way of the Sword are where the parry system truly shines. From the opening duel with Yoshioka Seijuro to the final battle against Minamoto no Yoshitsune, every major fight rewards reads and Issen timing over button-mashing.

Yoshioka Seijuro (opening duel)

The game opens with a duel against Yoshioka Seijuro, a master swordsman. This fight teaches the core loop of reading an attack, deflecting it and punishing with a counter.

Seijuro's arm is crippled during the fight, and the encounter ends in chaos as his students seek revenge. Treat it as the tutorial for the parry system you will use all game.

Sasaki Ganryu (rival)

Sasaki Ganryu, Musashi's historical rival, fights using his own Oni Gauntlet and is one of the game's hardest tests. He becomes obsessed with the gauntlet's power and slaughters humans to absorb their souls.

Musashi is defeated by Ganryu early on, establishing him as a wall to overcome later. The fight rewards learning his attack patterns and saving Oni Armament charge for his dangerous phases.

Shuten Douji (Oni traitor)

Shuten Douji is an Oni who betrayed his kind, and Musashi must transform into an Oni form to defeat him. This fight changes the rhythm by forcing you to rely on the Oni transformation rather than standard parries.

It is one of the more spectacular fights in the game, built around the supernatural elements of the setting rather than pure swordplay.

Minamoto no Yoshitsune (final boss)

The final boss is the Man in White, revealed to be Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who leads the Genma. He built a massive palace atop the gate to Hell, and the fight caps the story as Musashi scales it.

Yoshitsune fights as a near-godlike figure, and the battle demands mastery of every system the game has taught you. Deflects, Issen timing and Oni Armament management all matter here.

General boss tips

Enter boss fights with a full Oni Armament gauge by routing through blue-soul packs first. Do not overcap your soul gauge before the fight, since absorbed souls are wasted once full.

Most bosses reward patience over aggression: watch for telegraphed attacks and use steer and deflect to open them up. The Issen parry is your best tool — it turns a correct read into massive damage.

Break Issen on bosses

When you deplete a boss's stamina, Break Issen gives you a choice of body part to target. A red-marked part deals heavy damage but drops few orbs; a purple-marked part spawns a large number of orbs but deals less direct damage.

Choose based on your gauges. If your health is low, the extra orbs from a purple target can nearly refill you. If your Oni Armament gauge is empty, go purple to refill it, then make up the lost damage with an Oni attack. In Carnage mode, Ganryu also gains his own Issen and will occasionally counter your attacks, so keep your deflects sharp.
