Onimusha: Way of the Sword Musashi Voice Actor

Miyamoto Musashi is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya in Japanese and Kenjiro Thompson in English. His face is modeled on the late cinema icon Toshiro Mifune, which is why the character looks like the famous actor from the Samurai Trilogy.

Who voices Musashi in Japanese?

The Japanese voice of Miyamoto Musashi is Yoshimasa Hosoya, a well-known voice actor probably best recognized for Reiner Braun in Attack on Titan. He also has a long list of roles across games and anime.

Japanese reviews and players have consistently called the Japanese dub excellent, which matters for a samurai title where the setting is Edo-period Kyoto.

Who voices Musashi in English?

In English, Musashi is voiced by Kenjiro Thompson. The impulsegamer review described his performance as charming, though it also noted the default English dub drew some online criticism for how un-Japanese it sounded.

If you prefer the native feel, you can switch to the Japanese audio track, which is included and is regarded as the safer choice for authenticity.

Musashi's face model

Musashi's likeness is modeled on Toshiro Mifune, who portrayed the real Musashi in Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy. Capcom called Mifune the quintessential samurai action actor.

According to the game's development notes, it took two years of discussions and negotiations with Mifune Productions to secure the license to use his likeness.

Sasaki Ganryu's English voice

Sasaki Ganryu is voiced in English by Tashinga Bepete, who introduced himself alongside Thompson in a Capcom community interview. He described Ganryu as a swordsman with honor, training and discipline, made unhinged by overwhelming confidence.

Bepete is also credited with voice roles in Capcom's Dragon's Dogma, most notably as a pawn repeating "you're going the wrong way". This was Thompson's first game role.

The Capcom interview

In a Capcom community interview, both actors explained their approach to the characters. Thompson said he deliberately avoided Toshiro Mifune's films and the Musashi legend, wanting to come in with fresh eyes and build his performance around what the Japanese team and Japanese voice actor had established.

The two recorded their lines separately and played off each other's performances. The voice work spanned roughly a year and a half, and the game's voice direction changed in response to community feedback during the demo period. The voice actors for the remaining supporting cast, such as Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Shizuka Gozen, are still marked to be confirmed.

Why the casting matters

The pairing of Mifune's face with Hosoya's voice anchors the whole game's identity. Musashi is one of the most legendary swordsmen in Japanese history, and Capcom built the entire narrative around that iconography.

Both performances carry a story that reviewers described as simple but elevated by excellent acting. The dual-audio option means you can experience either cast regardless of region.
