Onimusha: Way of the Sword was in development for around six years on Capcom's RE Engine. Capcom has not publicly disclosed the budget, but the game moved over one million copies on its launch day — the strongest debut the franchise has had in its 20-year history.
Official development timeline
Per interviews with director Satoru Nihei and producer Akihito Kadowaki, planning on Way of the Sword began around 2020, coinciding with the maturation of the RE Engine. The team is led by Capcom veterans from Sengoku BASARA and Monster Hunter; this is director Satoru Nihei's first title lead as director after 15+ years on enemy / player action systems.
Capcom spent two years negotiating with Mifune Productions to license the late actor Toshiro Mifune's likeness for Musashi's face model. The team also consulted with officials from Kiyomizu-dera and other Kyoto temples to ensure historical authenticity.
