Weapon Tier List

Weapons are scored on five axes — Boss value, crowd control, single-target damage, utility, and ease of use — then tiered S (mandatory) through D (skip) based on a synthesis of KeenGamer, TechWiser, FinalBoss.io, 2UpSkill, G2A and community consensus.

Methodology

Musashi carries a single katana throughout the game. The real weapon choice is the seven Oni Armaments. All katana skins are purely cosmetic and do not affect stats.

Scoring Axes

Boss value: shield/armor break, stamina drain, Break Issen setup

Crowd control: add clear, projectile denial, area control

Single-target damage: burst, safe damage, elite kill speed

Utility: healing, purple souls, ranged options, puzzles, trophies

Ease of use: learning curve, forgiveness, story-locked availability

Quick Picks by Scenario

Armored boss / shielded elite: Earth-Shakers. Surrounded by adds: Wind-Whipper. Single-target burst / safe snipe: Flashing Void. Survival / healing: The Two Celestials. Oni Awakening build / endgame: Still Water. Flying / ranged targets: Oni Bow. Fire spread / dispersed groups: Firebird Flute.

Upgrade Priority

Enhance your katana first — it raises Regular Attack, Issen, and Oni Armament Power together. Then pick 1-2 armaments to specialize: safe route Two Celestials → Earth-Shakers; aggressive route Wind-Whipper → Flashing Void; Awakening route Still Water. Do not spread Oni Stones evenly.

Cross-Source Tier Comparison

Every published tier list ranks the armaments differently. This matrix shows each source's actual placement side by side — the disagreements are the interesting part.

Earth-Shakers

The only armament every single source places at or near the top. FinalBoss.io ranks it #1 overall; IGN calls it perhaps the most useful of all.

The Flashing Void

High S-tier in both KeenGamer and TechWiser; FinalBoss.io puts it fourth because safe burst matters less than stamina breaks in boss fights.

Wind-Whipper

S in TechWiser, A in KeenGamer, #3 in both FinalBoss.io and AppMedia — universal agreement as the crowd-control answer.

Still Water

The most contested armament: KeenGamer puts it in S for the endgame, FinalBoss.io drops it to fifth, and Steam players are actively debating whether it is the strongest of all.

The Two Celestials

The biggest split: KeenGamer rates it B, yet FinalBoss.io ranks it #2, G2A calls it the safest general pick, and AppMedia places it first overall.

Firebird Flute

Mid-tier everywhere it is ranked: useful fire tool, situational by nature. Maxroll separately calls it "somewhat lackluster" until its Charged Shot upgrade.

Oni Bow

KeenGamer separates it as pure Utility; FinalBoss.io excludes it from the six gauge-bound R1 armaments entirely — it competes for no gauge and works by its own rules.

Still Water Oni Armament should increase attack damage

A player argues the item description literally says the sword becomes stronger, so Still Water should also raise base attack damage beyond its purple-soul generation. A reply pushes back sarcastically: if it is already the acknowledged strongest armament, buffing it further would leave no reason to use anything else.

What IS the damn timing on chain issen????

The most active armament thread on the board (29 replies). Players struggle with Chain Issen timing; the practical community workaround is to grind it at the Practice Ground for the achievement, then abandon the mechanic entirely and use Oni Armament attacks for purple souls instead.

My thoughts on the demo

A player who finished the full game breaks down the demo: the release build has far more complex move sets, charged light and heavy attacks that cover distance, and a late-game ability that lets even light attacks reliably trigger Issen counters. Core combat stays defensive and reactive — only a few armaments enable aggressive play.

my opinion

A reminder thread: do not forget Still Water, the last armament — using it makes the three-phase boss of a first playthrough much easier. Another reply cautions that some of the loudest opinions on the board come from players who never bought the game.

Final boss second phase no damage?

A player stuck doing zero damage in the final boss's second phase discovers the mechanic: that phase is armored. The community fix is to parry him and break the armor with the hammer-type armament (Earth-Shakers) or keep attacking until it falls off on its own.

The story of how Onimusha: Way of the Sword was fun on a once-in-a-decade level

A long-form Japanese player essay. On difficulty: it plays like Sekiro — the Swordplay difficulty genuinely demands learning boss patterns, with the easier Action difficulty as the fallback. On weapons: the writer delights that Wind-Whipper handles exactly like the classic Shippu, the first armament like the old Tensoujin, and that the Raizan / Enryu sword skins are pure fan service to series veterans.

What Each Guide Says to Upgrade First

No reputable site publishes a single upgrade order, so this is a ledger of each guide's stated position:

IGN

First Special skill = Two Celestials: Combo Strength — "the first Oni weapon that you'll get your hands on, and they're useful throughout the entire game." First Basic skill = Blazing State, because it raises Blue Soul drops.

Maxroll

"Grab the first upgrade" on Wind-Whipper — it raises damage and duration together. Firebird Flute is "somewhat lackluster" until Charged Shot; Flashing Void's Break Issen node is "a great way to farm Red Souls from regular enemies."

PowerPyx

Completionist counter-advice: "Hold off on spending Oni Stones until you can unlock Oni Vision: Treasures, Treasures 2 and Search Range." PowerPyx counts 54 Oni Stones in the world and states you will not get enough in one playthrough to fully upgrade the Gauntlet.

AppMedia (日文)

Publishes the only outright ranking: Two Celestials first (start-up invincibility and a guaranteed flinch), Earth-Shakers second, Wind-Whipper third.

KeenGamer
